Styrofoam is so much fun to craft with because it comes in so many shapes, is very inexpensive, and can be used to create all sorts of home decor pieces. You dont have to be an artist to create art when you start with Styrofoam. In fact, you dont have to have any talent at all to create Styrofoam wall discs that are great for most any room. Create as many or as few as you want, and when youre finished hanging them, the room will have a whole new look.
Give any wall a 3-d dotted look by decorating the ordinary Styrofoam discs. There are any number of things you can use to decorate them. One of the easiest ways to cover the discs is to just use paper or fabric. Decoupage adhesive, found at most any craft store, makes it easy for you to attach paper or cloth to Styrofoam or other surfaces. The adhesive is not expensive and will allow you to do many projects.
Coat the front of the disc with the adhesive then position the paper or cloth. Trim away excess. Scrapbook paper gives you hundreds of choice for the theme of the Styrofoam discs. Cloth choices can be anything from heavy fabrics to wispy ones. The only requirement is that the material not be so thin as to allow you to see the Styrofoam underneath. Glue a wide piece of ribbon around the edges of the disc. You can later enhance the ribbon with decorative straight pins, fake jewels or other embellishments. Instead of ribbon you can also use a piece of cloth or a strip of paper. Cloth edges should be covered so that the finished disc does not show the raw edges of the material. Narrow ribbon or roping can help you conceal those edges. The finished discs can be decorative or useful. They can be covered and hung to look nice or you can actually use the discs to hold pictures, notes and more. The large dots are great for a teenage girls room. She can use ordinary tacks to hang everything from school schedule to cute guys pictures. Fabric is the best choice if youll be hanging things on the discs because it conceals the puncture holes better than paper. Make all the discs look exactly alike or make ones of solid, stripes and patterns to coordinate a variety of the discs. Line them up in planned patterns or just randomly attach them to the wall. You can group them together to make a 3-d statement or scatter them about the entire room. A piece of double-sided tape on the back of each disc makes them easy to hang in seconds. There are so many different looks you can create with the decorated discs. Cover them in plain cloth then use fabric paints to spell out a word or phrase with the discs. For example, spell your childs name, using one letter on each disc. Make similar ones for holidays or other occasions. Theyre easy to put up and take back down so theyre appropriate for most any special occasion. Instead of placing the discs all over a wall - or all over a room - make different arrangements that show off something you love. For instance, if you love lighthouses, make three or four discs that display different lighthouses then hang the four discs in a row or scattered around the room. Or, make only one special-theme disc and set it on a plate stand to display. Other decorating options include making a monogram from a disc and mounting it on the mantle, creating different ones and attaching them across a cornice, or even making a special disc to affix to the foot board of your bed. There are no limits to the different designs you can create and the different styles in which you can use the discs to decorate. Check your nearest craft store to find the discs along with decorative things to use to embellish them. Youll have a lot of fun with this craft that costs little but grabs attention. Just wait until your visitors see your new dotted room; theyll love it!
